Our
Programs
CCHLC is constantly upgrading and looking
for improved delivery in terms of outcome and efficiency. Support and input is always appreciated
from those who wish to be a part of raising these special children.
Our Home- At present 65 children ages 5-18 are
housed at CCHLC in 2 dormitories constructed by Kenya Build and sustained by local and international donations. In the orphanage children
are guided and cared for by a housemother and housefather who are on site 24
hours a day. Like any parent,
these 'houseparents' who are in fact parents themselves, have come to know the
personalities and unique needs of these very individual children. The houseparents receive board but as
carers are otherwise normally not compensated. This kind of caring is essential for the children and CCHLC is
looking for sponsors for the houseparents, who perform a very important role at the orphanage. They are not paid.
The children go to
school either on site, at local schools for primary 7-8 or board at high
school. They all pitch with cooking, hand washing their clothes, cleaning and carrying wood. Week-end activities include catch up
for those needing extra school help, music, sports, church and
socializing. CCHLC is also their home. It is a home full of love and hope and
with a true sense of family. The cost of feeding, housing, educating and caring for those at
CCHLC is high. Any contribution,
financial, material or in kind is greatly appreciated. You are welcome to contact the director.
Elementary School - Over 200 students, orphans,
fosters and local children attend CCHLC primary school. Eight dedicated and largely unpaid teachers teach, councel
and guide students through a curriculum based on national guidelines. The teachers are dedicated and caring
and proud to have these children write and pass their entrance exams at the end
of primary 8. The teachers are
paid less than $90/month but often there are no funds for this. CCHLC has a sponsorship
program for teachers. To ensure the continuity of quality education, please contact the director if you can help to pay Cheryl's teachers. All of the children are fed a morning supplement of porridge and full lunch. For many children it is the only regular meals they will have during the week.
Secondary/Tertiary
Education - Cheryl's has seen one student through nursing school (now working at Kijabe Mission Hospital) has qualified 5 more for university and 3 for colleges. 26 students are supported in high school for this academic year. Secondary school is not funded in Kenya
and as this is considered basic education for the director of Cheryl's, it is a
priority to keep these children in school. For most families living in poverty, high school is not
possible. Funding the children
through high school is perhaps the greatest challenge for CCHLC. For information on adopting a
child for education, please contact the
director or see them here.
Youth
Groups/Activities - Because CCHLC believes in a holistic and broad education,
within the school day and on weekends time is made for debate, traditional dance,
drama, individual counseling sessions and games. Here the children are
encouraged to be creative, think critically and learn to explore and articulate
their needs , those of society and the greater world.
Community Support/Counseling- Because CCHLC is located close to the slums, there are daily requests for help
from citizens. Women suffering
from AIDS and worrying for the future of the children, mothers unable to feed
their babies, relatives who know a child should be in school but is not. Sometimes short term emergency
financial support is drawn from Cheryl's meager funds so that a baby will have a
shirt and will not starve. CCHLC cannot
support all those who make requests but spends time in counseling and helping
those is desperate situations to find alternative sources of support or coping
strategies.
